How FUNIC ensures the employment of its Bachelor of Technology graduates

Education

Despite efforts to enhance education in Cameroon, many Higher Institutes continue to offer poor quality education, resulting in graduates with inadequate skills and knowledge, rendering them ill-prepared for the job market.

Many critics have lambasted universities in Cameroon for their failure to adequately prepare graduates for the job market.

Addressing the Issue of Unemployment Among Graduates

African graduates are often perceived as unemployable due to several reasons.

1. Education

Despite efforts to enhance education in Cameroon, many Higher Institutes continue to offer poor quality education, resulting in graduates with inadequate skills and knowledge, rendering them ill-prepared for the job market. A study by Kevin Lowden found that employers have high expectations of graduates' employability skills, such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management. However, many employers feel that new graduates lack these key skills due to factors such as a lack of work experience, insufficient preparation for the workplace, and unrealistic expectations of the job market.

2. Other contributing factors

A study aimed at uncovering the factors contributing to graduate unemployment in Ethiopia identified five key independent variables associated with graduate unemployment, including demographic characteristics, curriculum, institutional characteristics, graduate characteristics, and economic and labor market conditions.

Addressing the Issue

In response to these challenges, FUNIC has taken specific measures to improve the curriculum and graduate characteristics to ensure employment for its Bachelor of Technology graduates:

* Implementing a Curriculum with a Career Readiness Program that focuses on 5 dimensions: Attitude and Mindset, Applied Math, Graphic Literacy, World of Work, and Workplace Documents.

* Offering paid professional internships to provide practical work experience and insight into employer expectations.

* Engaging lecturers from the corporate world and assigning each student a professional mentor.

* Providing guidance on professional life planning to help students balance work and study effectively.

* Offering a stipend and coaching on money management, including saving and budgeting.

* Emphasizing the use of modern technology in education and completing assignments on the Learning Management System.

* Facilitating professional networking opportunities through seminars to connect students with employers and senior executives.

* Coaching students on balancing work, study, and personal life to achieve a satisfying work-life balance.

These measures demonstrate FUNIC's commitment to equipping graduates with the skills and experience needed to succeed in the job market.
